We talk about corruption where we can. We talk about its root in our society, impact on the society and of course it’s removal from our society. We give our ideas and suggestions to fight against it. We had performed many outcries against it.
But to our surprise, corrupt people are still winning elections; even after we have a democracy; right to select or reject. Can I define this as ‘Why corruption has not been the top influencer in Indian elections?’
Most of us may think that Indian voters are ‘ idiot’ and ‘ dumb ’ to select corrupt people but not, they are rational in selecting the leader. Surprised? Actually, there are circumstances and conditions which force an individual to do so. To understand this in detail we’ll need to do some classifications. Let we classify Indians in five major categories: Group 1, Group 2, Group 3, Group 4 and Group 5. (Don’t think I’m dividing Indians.)
This group classification will speak out why Indian voters select a corrupt person as their leader, even after knowing the naked truth.
This group largely consist people of low-caste (according to our system) and sometimes poor. They are always oppressed by government in house. Corruption is not the top influencer to them because for them their identity is foremost. How identity is foremost for them? Actually, they want someone from their community to be their representative (face), to be their identity. It acts like esteem plus power.
They want someone whom they can call when a traffic police cop stops them at signal for breaking traffic rules or something like that. They want someone whom they can call when there is a police case against them. (So that he force police to not register an FIR against them or release by taking some bucks in other intense situations.)It does not matter to them that he will loot them or loot their development because he’ll help them in many circumstances like I have mentioned above.
Clever top officials of political parties understand this and they go with a community face in elections. This community face ‘ lollipop’ overrides the corruption.
They have a rational approach; they think that politicians will not consider them after elections and will again give them ‘ lollipop’ in next election season and we can’t deny it because it is the black truth of our Indian politics.
Now, what is the solution for them? What they should do to take advantage of right to select or reject? They have come with a solution to take bucks at election time and it is correct from their angle and again you can’t deny it. They know that these ‘drivers’ of nation will again not do anything for them in their next tenure. It’s better to have ‘ ladoo’ at least in election time.
What I personally think is there this perception is right. Sometimes, this one day election earning is equivalent to their earning of months. This money brings happiness to their home, the happiness which politicians will not bring in next five years.
They even do justice with candidates after this earning. I have noticed many things in the past few elections. One of them is that many of them take bucks from almost all the candidates to vote for them and in the end they end with not voting. When I asked one such person about this, he said ‘This is justice to them. I can’t do injustice by voting for one and hence I prefer not to vote.’ He laughed.
They have to vote for corrupt people because they don’t have plenty of options. A sixty-four thousand dollar question is why they do not have plenty of options in democracy? Actually, in our India, there are only three major fronts, the NDA, the UPA and the third front. At regional level in almost all the states expect a few; again there are only two or three options.
Now, people of this group do is they shuffle their vote every time in those limited options with a hope that this time, this party will do better than the previous one and better than their own past record and some intellectuals define it as ‘ anti-incumbency factor ’ if a present government loss in elections. (I’ll tell you in one of my future post, why many a times corrupt people regains power in next election even after ‘ anti-incumbency factor ’ or shuffling of votes. You can subscribe for it-> Send me future articles.)
Even now they have a distinct option i.e. None Of The Above (NOTA) but due to its limitations or poor marketing, it couldn’t create that space in Indian politics, which it should have created with present scenario.
These people are victim of ‘ hype ’ that our political system has created. ‘ Hype ’ is as simple as eating a pie but as complex as understanding a teen girl ( Don’t worry, it’s my personal experience; you might have mastered it ).
Let us take an example with some assumptions. Suppose a Muslim candidate has contest an election from a Hindu area. Let me put a favorable condition here; assume that he is ‘ not-corrupt ’. He even did marketing of his ‘ cleanness ’. But in the end he lost the election. You got it? And it applies vice versa when a Hindu contests an election from Muslim area.
Actually, people think that if they select their leader from other community then there will be a ‘ religious insecurity ’. Many a times, it turns to self-esteem.
It is more catalyzed by tagging. We have political sides with fixed tag like ‘ communist ’ and ‘ secular ’. These tags misdirect people from their basic criteria of selection. Hence they are ready to go with a corrupt person of their community for a religious security. Salute.
What I can say about this group. These people are genius or in the language of journalism they are ‘ mastermind ’. They have a settled life, do you know why? It’s all because of second word of the title of this blog. Scroll up and you’ll find it is ‘corruption’. Therefore, they can’t go away from it. They want someone community brother to be their leader who allows them corruption with a lion’s share.
They have immense power with them in the terms of strength, people and of course MONEY or at least they have two of them which help the candidates to win. I don’t want to mention who they are because you know them better.
We should not throw stones on someone else’s mansion when we have a mansion of glass; and this what they do. One more; Nobody wants to kill the hen which gives golden eggs, so why they should kill it. They are absolutely correct.

GROUP 2
People of this group are like subset of Group 1 because these are also mostly poor and low-caste (according to our system). The only difference they have from group 1 is that they don’t have someone from their community who can be their face or representative. They have a rational approach; they think that politicians will not consider them after elections and will again give them ‘ lollipop’ in next election season and we can’t deny it because it is the black truth of our Indian politics.

GROUP 3
This group carries a good vote percentage, which is more than former two groups discussed. These people are so called ‘ hopeful middle-class ’. They are busy with their so called ‘ settled life ’ and mostly prefer not to have a political interference. They have to vote for corrupt people because they don’t have plenty of options. A sixty-four thousand dollar question is why they do not have plenty of options in democracy? Actually, in our India, there are only three major fronts, the NDA, the UPA and the third front. GROUP 4
This group is of so called ‘ communal people ’ and they somewhat fall in group 1 but due to its extent we can’t merge it with group 1.These people are victim of ‘ hype ’ that our political system has created. ‘ Hype ’ is as simple as eating a pie but as complex as understanding a teen girl ( Don’t worry, it’s my personal experience; you might have mastered it ).

THE CONCLUSION
Each group has a different reason for opting corrupt people. The basic of all the reason is lack of awareness and education. This lack of awareness has created a lag between the truth and hype. I remember once late Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam said, “ If a country is to be corruption free and become a nation of beautiful minds, I strongly feel there are three key societal members who can make a difference. They are the father, the mother and the teacher.”
